Patience Is a Virtue

A hand of video poker should be viewed similar to the way a hand of single deck blackjack is played whereby the cards are shuffled after each round. A player is never to assume that cards drawn in a previous hand are no longer available to a player in a subsequent round. With that in mind, a player who happens to have lost multiple hands in a row should not be discouraged as easily. Even if a player has lost 15 hands in a row, there is no reason not to believe that the next hand could produce a winning combination where losses from the previous 15 hands can be made up very quickly. A bad shoe in blackjack can in actuality continue to get worse based on sheer numbers since the game itself has a built-in memory. Video poker is played in such a way that each hand is independent from each other the same way that each roll in craps or each spin in roulette has nothing to do with each other. It is possible to lose multiple hands in a row but to then win it back with one good draw of cards. This is why patience in video poker is a virtue and one should not walk away from a machine that does not seem to be paying out. You do not want to walk away from a video poker machine only to witness someone getting paid out ten minutes later after you had left. That will only lead to frustration. When sitting at a video poker machine set a limit on how many hands in a row you are willing to lose before getting up. That way if you get up and find that someone else has won on a machine you were previously playing at, you can take solace in the fact that you at least adhered to your own set of guidelines.
