Misconception on Who Plays Online Bingo
If I had a dollar for every time a person told me that bingo was a boring game meant for old grannies that have long retired and need something to keep them busy, I would be a very wealthy man and at this point would never have to contemplate playing bingo again. Unfortunately for me, people do not hand out dollar bills when they explain away their theories. However, it is interesting to note that for all the people out there who are of the opinion that bingo is for the older segment of the population, I have news that may shock you.
The game of bingo is in actuality NOT dominated by the older generation. Bingo is a game mostly played by people between the ages of 25-54. In fact, 80% of people who play online bingo are under 60. This is in contradiction to the popular opinion that bingo is a game for grannies and grandpas. Funny enough, now that I think about all the times I played bingo at a hall, the majority of people in attendance were not over 60 years of age. Despite realizing this fact now, I among others was guilty of perceiving the bingo hall as a place where I would find participants who were mostly senior citizens.
I often wonder how an activity could be so misrepresented in terms of its demographics. How can an activity that is perceived to be so dominated by a certain type of person be played mostly by a completely different segment of the population? It is similar to saying that most people who like baseball are girls under 10 years of age and then going to a different park every night to find that the sport is played only by men over 45 years old. We know that women like to shop and as such we see more women window shopping and talking about the subject.
We know that men enjoy football more than women and as such most people watching the sport at bars are male. We know that basketball is played mostly by men and that synchronized swimming is enjoyed mostly by women. Why is it that the type of person that we perceive to enjoy bingo the most is actually far from the truth? Perhaps it is due to the slow moving nature of the game or maybe those who participate in online bingo do not let others know as frequently that it is an activity that they enjoy.
