Lucky Charms

You have seen it a thousand times. After frequenting your local land-based bingo hall on a few occasions, it should come as no surprise to find a portion of the players in attendance setting up a shrine of good luck charms in front of them. Sometimes, the good luck charms are placed in a particular order. At other times, they are colour coordinated. I have even witnessed a woman lining up good luck charms from her tallest to smallest piece. On rare occurrences, I have seen certain players place framed photographs of their loved ones on the table in front of them as they dab their cards.

A large portion of players who use good luck charms to provide them with a sense of security are often snickered at, teased, or made fun of by other players who are not of the opinion that superstition plays any role in determining the outcome of who will win each game. I personally, whether playing online or land-based bingo have never made use of a good luck charm. I do not feel any false sense of security in knowing that if plush doll figures are lined up “just-so” in front of me while I play, there is an increased chance that I will win at least one game on that particular evening.

However, that does not give anyone the right to poke fun at another player who enjoys the use of good luck charms while they are engaged in their bingo session. Athletes have superstitions that some would consider much more “weird” than what is seen at bingo halls. Everyone at some point or another uses some sort of superstitious method to make themselves feel better. If a baseball player who is scheduled to pitch on that day is permitted to wear certain socks and eat a specific type of meal than certainly it should not harm anyone if a player wishes to have a few pieces in front of them that they feel may bring them luck.
