Online bingo 'good for the mind'

Online bingo can be good for the mind, according to psychology experts.

Along with Sudoku, bingo has been credited with increasing brain power by experts at the University of Southampton's Psychology Department.

A team of researchers has claimed that people who play bingo, especially older people, experience a mental boost which the scientists suggest could come from the eye coordination needed to check numbers in a time-pressured environment.

Bingo players also often remember a wide range of bingo call signs, such as 'one little duck' or 'me and you' for number one and 'Burlington Bertie', 'Dirty Gertie', 'Speed limit', 'Flirty thirty' or 'Blind 30' for number 30.

Again, these small memory exercises boost brain activity, according to the researchers.

Bingo is also a social game, especially online, with young and older bingo players competing alongside each other – another way of improving brain function, say the experts.

As part of the tests, the researchers found that younger players, although faster at recognising and checking numbers, were less accurate than the older players overall.

The tests also found that, from the 112 people analysed, all of the regular bingo players were much more accurate and faster at marking off the numbers than non-bingo players.
